Occupational Therapy (OT)

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a treatment intervention that helps children with physical, sensory, and/or cognitive difficulties complete everyday tasks and activities independently and with confidence.

OT can be helpful for children with: ADHD, autism, anxiety, OCD, ODD, sensory processing, dyspraxia, developmental delays, or physical disabilities.

How do I know if my child would benefit from Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy (OT) is beneficial for many children!

OT can improve a child’s attending, social skills, communication abilities, appropriate play skills, self-regulation and emotional awareness, fine and gross motor skills, behavior, hand-eye coordination, visual-spatial awareness, coordination, self-care abilities, and so much more!

If your child is clumsy, struggles with attending, has difficulty with handwriting, using utensils, or other fine motor skills, squirms all the time, is not meeting his/her motor milestones, has difficulty with balance, or exhibits textural avoidance with their food OT can help!

What does an OT session look like?

Our OT sessions look like fun!  Each OT session is individually developed for each child so no two sessions will look alike.

Children may work on brushing their teeth, balancing on stepping stones, tracing or writing their names, following a visual schedule, organizing items in their backpacks, following rules in age-appropriate games, climbing our rock wall, tolerating different textures in sensory bins, chewing their snacks, or identifying their current emotional states, depending on the needs of the child.

Who runs my child’s OT sessions?

Our OT sessions are run by our amazing occupational therapists!

Our occupational therapists actively collaborate with our in-house speech therapists as well as our ABA practitioners to create truly comprehensive treatment plans.

How long will my child need OT?

Every child is different, has different challenges and progresses at a different rate, therefore, the length of time your child will need services is dependent on their individual progress and needs.

What is the schedule for OT?

The length and frequency of therapy is indivualized for each child. Sessions are typically 30 minutes in length and held 1-2x/week, depending on clinical recommendations. Parents/caregivers typically wait in our waiting room during the session and meet with our OT at the end of the session to discuss progress, parent feedback, suggestions to work on strategies at home, and OT recommendations.

Our OT begins with an a thorough evaluation in order to assess your child’s current skillset and deficits and to develop an individualized treatment plan prior to starting services.

If your child receives ABA or speech therapy with Believe in Me OT therapy sessions can be coordinated with your child’s current schedule.

*Your child does NOT need to attend ABA therapy in order to receive OT services.
